What is the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term life covers you for a fixed number of years and pays only if you die inside that period. Whole life covers you for your whole life and builds cash value, and for the same amount of cover it costs several times more each month.

Neither is the better product in the abstract, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Term exists to cover a temporary obligation such as a mortgage, children at home or a business loan. Whole life exists to cover a permanent one, or to leave a guaranteed amount behind no matter when you die. Most South Florida households we see need a large amount of term and, sometimes, a small amount of permanent cover.

How it works

A term policy is a rental. You pick an amount and a length, the premium stays level for that length, and if you are still alive at the end the cover stops and you get nothing back. That is why it is cheap. A whole life policy is ownership. The premium is level for life, a portion goes into a cash value you can borrow against, and the death benefit is paid whenever you die. You are paying for certainty, and certainty is expensive.

What it costs

The price gap is the whole decision. For the same death benefit at the same age in the same health, whole life typically costs many times what term costs per month. Put the other way, a household on a fixed budget can buy far more protection with term than with whole life, which matters while children are young and a mortgage is outstanding. Families who buy a small whole life policy because it is all they can afford are often underinsured during exactly the years they are most exposed.

What to do next

Decide the amount first, then the type. Work out what your household would actually need using the four things that sink a surviving family: debt, income replacement, mortgage and education. Then see what fits the budget. If the number is large and the need has an end date, term almost always wins. If you want a guaranteed payout for final expenses regardless of age, that is a separate, smaller purchase, and it can sit alongside a term policy rather than replacing it.

Related questions

Can I convert a term policy to whole life later?

Many term policies include a conversion option that lets you switch to a permanent policy without new medical questions. Whether yours does, and until what age, is in the policy itself.

What happens when my term ends?

Cover stops. Some policies let you renew annually at a much higher premium, but the usual plan is to have the obligation paid off by then.

Is whole life a good investment?

It is insurance with a savings component, not an investment. Judge it on the guaranteed cover and the premium you can sustain for life, not on a projected return.
