Health Insurance & ACA
Marketplace deadlines, subsidy limits and who qualifies in Florida.
- When does ACA open enrollment end for 2027? ACA open enrollment for 2027 coverage ends January 15, 2027.
- What is the income limit for ACA subsidies in Florida? To qualify for a premium tax credit in Florida your household income generally needs to fall between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.
- Can I get ACA coverage with an ITIN? Having an ITIN by itself does not make you eligible to buy Marketplace coverage, because Marketplace eligibility depends on being lawfully present in the United States, not on which kind of taxpayer number you file with.
Supplemental Coverage
Medigap, and how supplemental cover fits beside Medicare.
- Do I need a Medigap plan if I have Medicare Advantage? No. You cannot hold both, and Medicare.gov is blunt about it: it is illegal for someone to sell you a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Can I have Medicare and Medicaid at the same time? Yes. Medicare.gov calls people who have both Medicare and full-benefit Medicaid coverage dually eligible, and roughly one in five Medicare beneficiaries is.
Dental & Vision
What Original Medicare leaves out, and where dental and vision cover actually comes from.
- Does Medicare cover dental? No, not routine dental care. Medicare.gov is explicit: in most cases Medicare does not cover dental services like routine cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures or implants, and you pay all costs.
- Does Medicare cover eye exams and glasses? No. Medicare.gov states plainly that Medicare does not cover routine eye exams, and you pay all costs.
Life Insurance
How much cover a household needs, and what final expense policies actually pay for.
- How much life insurance do I need? Enough to clear your debts and mortgage, fund your children’s education, and replace your income for as long as your household depends on it.
- Does life insurance pay for funeral costs? Yes. A life insurance death benefit is paid to your beneficiary as cash and can be used for anything, including funeral and burial costs.
- What is the difference between term and whole life insurance? Term life covers you for a fixed number of years and pays only if you die inside that period.
Self-Employed & Small Business
Coverage and tax questions for people who work for themselves.
- How do self-employed people get health insurance in Florida? Through the individual Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov.
- Can I deduct health insurance premiums if I am self-employed? Yes, in most cases. The self-employed health insurance deduction is claimed on Schedule 1 of Form 1040, line 17, which means you get it without itemizing, and it is calculated on Form 7206.
- Do I have to file taxes to get an ACA subsidy? Yes. If you take a premium tax credit you must file a federal income tax return and attach Form 8962 to reconcile it, and the IRS is explicit that you must file even if you are usually not required to.
